MERA PEAK CLIMBING

Mera is the highest trekking peak in Nepal, standing at 6,476 m. and is situated in an uninhabited and unspoilt part of Nepal to the south-east of Everest. Whilst the summit of Mera is our ultimate goal, the outstanding feature of this trip is the trek through the Hinku valley which is one of the wildest and most beautiful in Nepal. This will allow us to sample a true 'wilderness experience' en route to Mera.

We start the trek by flying to Lukla and from here proceed slowly to the east, crossing the Zatrwa La, and after nine days trekking we eventually reach the Mera La where we site our base camp. From here it is possible to ascend to the summit in one day, but we will make use of a high camp to increase our chances of success. The steady climb to the north summit rewards our efforts with one of the finest viewpoints in Nepal, giving fantastic views of five 8,000m peaks, Everest and Lhotse to the north, Kanchanjunga and Makalu to the east, and Cho Oyu to the west.
This trek is a fully equipped camping trek with accommodation in two person tents and food being cooked by our kitchen staff. Transport to and from the Everest region is by air.

HIUCHULI PEAK

Hiunchuli, at a height of 6,441 meters, forms a massive south-facing wall together with Annapurna South. Its eastern face overlooks the Modi Khola and guards the entrance to the Annapurna Sanctuary. An American Peace Corps Expedition, via the southeast face, first climbed Hiunchuli in October 1971. The mountain is not technically difficult to climb but is vulnerable to rock falls, and route finding may also be a problem. Even though it offers major new route potentials, it has received little attention from mountaineers and is rarely climbed. More information

ISLAND PEAK

Island peak is one of the most popular trekking peak in Nepal. Perhaps the name of peak is so because from Dingboche the peak is seen as an island in a sea of ice. The summit is interesting and attractive with a highly glaciated west face rising from the Lhotse Glacier. The ridge rising to the south from this point leads to the summit of Island Peak. The extension of this ridge descending southwest is the part of the normal route of ascent and leads to the south Summit.

Imja Tse, another name of the same Island Peak does not only provide an enjoyable climb but also provides some of the most spectacular scenery of Himalayas in the Khumbu region. View from the summit are Nuptse (7,879m), Lhotse (8,501m), Lhotse Middle Peak (8,410m) and Lhotse Shar (8,383m) make a semi circle in the north. The views of Makalu (8475m) in the east, Baruntse and Amadablam in the south add much more charming bonus in climbing Island Peak. More information

THARPU CHULI

Tharpu Chuli (Tent Peak) is located in the Annapurna sanctuary. The Sanctuary is an amphitheater, with a range of impressive Himalayan Peaks forming a vast bowl, accessible only from the South through the Modi Khola River valley. The immense South Face of Annapurna South (7291m), situated at the head of the Annapurna South Glacier, guards the Western flank of the Sanctuary. And right in the middle this all is Tharpu but also seeing ranges of mountain scenery. Tharpu Chuli is 5663m. Where the surrounding peaks are presented in all their glory from summit. The South Face Base Camp of Annapurna is the fine a scent to the climbing teams, not only to the enjoying. The trek to advance camp involves crossing the South Annapurna Glacier. This is not an easy crossing. It involves a steep descent into the glacier through very rough ground among the confused mass of loose rocks of all sizes on the glacier floor. Then need to be climbed up the other side of the glacier. It takes almost 7 hours to reach advance camp. However, you are rewarded with breath-taking views all the way. Advance camp is roughly at 4500m, just on the snowline.

CHULU WEST
There is controversy regarding the name and location of the Chulu peaks. There are several peaks forming part of Chulu massif but these are not always indicated on maps. It is therefore sometimes difficult to differentiate between the two trekking Chulus (East and West) as the group comprises of four peaks, two to the east and two to the west. To add further confusion, Chulu West may also be called Chulu Central. Chulu West lies to the north of Annapurna above the Manang Valley and is the highest of the peaks. It was first climbed in 1952 by a Japanese Expedition. The Base Camp for the climb is situated in a small valley north of Manang, off the main trail to the Thorang La. At Chauri Lather we take a narrow, steep trail up to a Base Camp at 4800m. From there we climb steep, rocky ground to a high camp at about 5300m. There is no technical difficulty involved in reaching the summit  but progress can be slow as the slopes are vulnerable to avalanches in certain conditions.

Ascent of Chulu West and Chulu Central are best made from a base camp in a small valley north of Manang situated off the main trail to Thorong La pass 5416m. Indeed some of the best views of this peak can be had from that pass. Climb the rock band with some difficulty to the north-west shoulder of Chulu west 5450 meters/17,880 feets, where another camp can be established or alter-native a camp can be placed on a snow plateau above 5,530 meters/18,143 feets. On the first ascent and several subsequent ascents rope was fixed on the rock band. From the plateau continue up the progressively narrowing ridge to the summit 6,250 meters /20,505 feets. Descend by the some route. North-West Ridge: Go beyond the hut following the yak pastures and walk up a ridge which leads into a hidden valley where it is possible to find a good site for base camp. From this camp , ascend steep screen slopes to a col 4,900/16,076 feet), on a subsidiary ridge that leads down from the main ridge. To the north of the col ascend snow slope for 200 meters to the base of a band of rock at an altitude of 5,100 meters and the site for a possible high camp.

KWANGDE PEAK

Kwangde Ri, also called Kongde Ri or Kwande on some maps, is in the Everest region. It is a difficult mountain which forms an impressive, multi-summited ridge on the eastern end of the Lumding Himal, which, in turn, can be regarded as part of the Rolwaling Himal. OUTLINE ITINERARY

Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu meet with our representative at the airport. Drive to hotel.

Day 02: Kathmandu.
Half day sightseeing around Kathmandu valley and Swayambhunath. Free, preparation for the trekking.

Day 03: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m.) and it takes approximately five hours. The trail starts through a level path along the right bank. Thamserku looms skyward on the opposite bank. You cross a stream and climb the terraced hill from the Dudh Koshi route, to arrive at Bengar. The trail now climbs from the riverbed on the left bank into the mountain, through a forest to Chumoa. You continue along a path with many ups and downs; cross a stream, and pass by the tiny village of Monjo. Now you descend the path of stone steps and return to the right bank over a wooden bridge. After a short climb you come to Jorsale’s teahouse and hotel, also stop at the National Park Service where a park entrance fee is collected. After your departure from Jorsale you enter a forested mountainside. You follow a short walk along the riverbed of this V-shaped valley where the river forks - the right is the Dudh Koshi and the left is the Bhote Koshi that leads to Nampa La. After short distance along the Bhote Kosi you begin the steep ascent to Namche Bazar. As the mountain path zigzags uphill, you will emerge at a ridge top rest area that offers excellent views of Everest (8848m) and Lhotse (8516m.) The climb eases somewhat, and Namche Bazar appears ahead as you travel along the path surrounded by pines. Pass the plateau where the Saturday bazaar is held and enter the village. Namche Bazar (3440m) is surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges and opens out only where it faces the Bhote Koshi. The village is a central hub of the area and food, sundries and even mountain climbing equipment may be purchased here.

Day 04: Rest day at Namche Bazaar (3440m.) for acclimatization. Namche is tucked away between two ridges amidst the giant peaks of the Khumbu and has an abundance of lodges, tea shops and souvenir shops as well as a magnificent outlook. It is an ideal place to spend a rest day for acclimatization to the high altitude before heading off towards Tyangboche. For the acclimatization you walk upto Khhumjung where you can visit monastery. Khhumjung is densely populated by Sherpa community. You can also enjoy the splendid views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse, Tawche, Kwangde and so on. Or you can have an hour walk up to the Syangboche (3800m.) where Everest View Hotel is situated above Namche for the outstanding view of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru. .There is also good views from the National Park Centre and Museum just above the town. This museum exhibits Sherpa culture.

Day 05: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tenngboche (3867m.) which takes about five hours..You leave the village for a climb to the top of a ridge and level mountain path that offers an excellent panorama of Thamserku, Kantega, and Kusum Kangrib. To the right there is a steep cliff that drops down to the Dudh Kosi, faintly visible on the valley floor below. As you make your way around a branch ridge, Ama Dablam (6812m) Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse (7855m) and Tawoche (6501m) suddenly appear. After a gentle descent the mountain path ends; you will come to the fork leading to Gokyo. Now you descend past two tea houses and through the village of Trashinga. Though you cannot see it, you can hear the Dudh Kosi and soon you descend to the river and arrive at Phunki Tenga. It is a long climb to Tyangboche; the first half is especially steep. As you climb through the forested zone, the incline eases and a splendid view appears. Continue climbing the mountainside diagonally until you come to the stone gate built by lamas which marks your entry into Tyangboche (3867m). You may use the large plateau in front of the splendid monastery as your campsite. There are a lodge and hotel managed by the National Park Service. Tyangboche is an important lookout point on this course, and the sunset on Everest and Ama Dablam is especially beautiful

Day 06: Trek from Tengboche to Pheriche: and it takes about five hours. You trek gradual ascent path all the way to your destination. This day you are utterly enchanted by the spectacular views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Everest, Thamserku, Kantega, Lobuche and so on. En route you pass villages such as Pangboche and Shomare. En route you walk along rocky path with spectacular views of Pumori, Tobuche peak, Ama Dablam, Nuptse and many more. Lobuche is a small Sherpa village with its distinct culture adjacent to Khumbu Glacier.

Day 08: Trek from Lobuche to Kala Patthar via Gorakshep: and trek back to Gorakshep and it takes about five hours. After an early breakfast, you will prepare for Kala Patthar (5545m.) Trek up the valley following the rocky moraine path, view icy glacial pond and icebergs down below of Khumbu glacier. After the last rocky moraine dunes, a short downhill walk brings you to Gorakshep, the flat field below Kala Patthar (5545m) and Mt. Pumori (7145m.) Gorakshep is the location of the original Everest Base Camp with the new camp being further up the valley. The walk is gradual until you reach a rocky spot; from there another uphill climb for half an hour brings you to Kala Patthar. From Kala Patthar top, the views will be beyond your wildest imagination, with Everest seeming within a stones throw distance between the summit of Mt. Nuptse and Lho-La and Lhotse on the back. The panoramic view from this spot is something to cherish and you feel it’s worth the hard climb up to here and to feel at the top of the world. With all the higher snow capped giants that dominate all around, it is truly a magnificent spot to be at on a clearer sunny day. After a great moment, an hour descent takes you back to Gorakshep.

Day 09: Trek from Gorakshep to Everest Base Camp: and back to Gorakshep which takes about five hours. While trekking to Everest Base Camp you pass through a trail, which weaves its way through ice pinnacles and past the crevasses of the Khumbu Glacier. On the return leg, you can take a higher route to get a spectacular view of the Khumbu icefall and numerous mountains. You return to Lobuche to stay overnight.

CHULU EAST

The Chulu peak rise above the dry, arid Manang region of Nepal. This remote area lies in the rain shadow of the massive Annapurna Himal. We begin our approach by following the Marsyandgi Khola through a variety of landscapes and cultures. From the subtropical land of the Gurung people to the high Tibetan like region of the Manang people. Our route up Pisang Peak rises in an elegant are of the S.W. face to a steep, icy ridge. The route is not technically difficult but demands solid snow climbing skills and excellent physical conditioning. Following our ascent of Pisang we trek further up valley to the district head quarters of Manang. A long day takes us to base camp. After a rest day we precede to high camp on a high col. Our route to the summit follows the exposed N.E. ridge on snow and ice with outstanding views of the Annapurna and Manaslu to the East. A quick descent takes us back to Ogre where we take a flight to Pokhara then to Kathmandu.

This expedition combines all the best elements of a Himalayan expedition. While the trip is strenuous and demands that each participant be well versed in alpine snow climbing skills, it is an excellent way to experience the culture of Nepal and ascend two Himalayan peaks in the safest possible way.

MT CHOLATSE

On what should have been the third ascent of the Ama Dablan’s (6814m) north east face -1700m vertical metres, Ueli Steck wisely decided to retreat at 5900m as the conditions were dangerous due to heavy snowfalls. Similarly on the Tawoche, as he made an initial attempt on the east face’s rocky ramparts, he realized that only a kamikaze would consider it. He alternatively chose the ice on the left of the wall which was a relatively easy (for him), regular line that took four and half hours to climb overnight on the 24th April. In the morning, following 1500 metres of ice (up and down) varying between 50 and 60 degrees with a few vertical pitches judged as M5, he got back to base camp in time for breakfast …… It was the first time in seven years that someone reached this incredible mountain’s summit.
